DOT Undersecretary Benito Bengzon Jr. participates in the Songkran festival together with Thailand’s ambassador to the Philippines H.E. Thanalip Upatising and Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor Yuthasak Supasom at the Bonifacio High Street activity area as part of the opening ceremony of the 1000 Smiles Thai Festival.
The Songkran festival, celebrated from 13-15 April, represents the traditional Thai New Year. The word “Songkran” is Sanskrit meaning “passage”into a new year.
Celebrated during the hottest time of the year, the young playfully splash water over each other to share a feeling of coolness. The act is also meant to bring blessings into people’s lives.
Family gathering is also an essential part in which the young prepare flower garlands for a respectful rite involving scented water on the hands of their elders and to wish them long and healthy lives.
